Hollywood woke up to the news of Robert Redford’s death. The veteran actor died in his sleep at his Utah home on September 16. The Sting and All the President’s Men actor Redford was a star since he broke through with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid in 1969. He went on to become an Oscar-winning filmmaker and founded the Sundance Film Festival in 1978. His co-stars Jane Fonda, Meryl Streep, Morgan Freeman, and other Hollywood personalities like Priyanka Chopra and Antonio Banderas remembered the great man and climate activist. Hollywood mourns Robert Redford Jane Fonda, who worked with Redford in films like Barefoot in the Park, The Chase, The Electric Horseman, and Our Souls at Night, shared in a statement, “It hit me hard this morning when I read that Bob was gone. I can’t stop crying. He meant a lot to me and was a beautiful person in every way. He stood for an America we have to keep fighting for.” Oscar winner Meryl Streep, who was paired with him in Out of Africa, put out a statement that said, “One of the lions has passed. Rest in peace my lovely friend.” Taking to X (formerly Twitter), Morgan Freeman posted, “There are certain people you know that you’re going to click with. After working with Robert Redford on Brubaker in 1980, we instantly became friends. Working with him again in An Unfinished Life was a dream come true. Rest peacefully, my friend.” Zorro star Antonio Banderas also wrote, “Robert Redford leaves us, an icon of cinema in every sense. Actor, director, producer, and founder of the Sundance Festival. His talent will continue to move us forever, shining through the frames and in our memory. Ethan Hawke also wrote on Instagram, “Robert Redford, our ultimate champion of independent film, relentless advocate for authentic storytelling and fiercely passionate environmentalist. Robert’s legacy remains ingrained in our culture, transformed by his artistry, activism and the founding of Sundance Institute and Film Festival.” Finally, the Sundance Institute said in a statement, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of our founder and friend Robert Redford. Bob’s vision of a space and a platform for independent voices launched a movement that, over four decades later, has inspired generations of artists and redefined cinema in the U.S. and around the world. Beyond his enormous contributions to culture at large, we will miss his generosity, clarity of purpose, curiosity, rebellious spirit, and his love for the creative process. We are humbled to be among the stewards of his remarkable legacy, which will continue to guide the Institute in perpetuity.”
