Peacemaker season 2 saw the return of various familiar players, including a personal one for John Cena's DC hero. Despite taking out his father in the first season, Christopher Smith was given a chance to meet a different version of the White Dragon through the DCU's Chapter 1: "Gods and Monsters." In an interview with ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns for the return of his charitable Love Ride event, Robert Patrick finally opened up about coming back for Peacemaker season 2, but through the multiverse concept as a new version of Auggie Smith. After his first iteration of the DC foe was killed in season 1, Patrick stated. "Oh my gosh. I've been thinking about it, and I've been talking about Peacemaker a lot." He elaborated on how "people have been asking me about it, and thinking about James Gunn, and thinking about John Cena, and the whole cast, David Denman, who played my son, and the whole experience." As he is "running into fans, and they've been asking me about it. I have to say that it felt so good to be able to come back and play that good version of Auggie Smith, and be a part of that story of that new dimensional portal, that new reality that Chris Smith gets to experience. The DC veteran also loved seeing how Peacemaker season 2 explored "his brother being alive, and his dad being a good guy, it felt so good because he was such a bad dude, and then it's a redemptive sort of thing." Robert Patrick: For me, as an actor, to take ostensibly the same character and do a good version of him, what a unique perspective and way to handle it. There's a lot of people I've worked with over the years, and directors, and there's very few that are like James Gunn. He's up there with my all-time favorite guys, because he creates such a comfortable, creative environment that allows for a real collaboration between actors and their director. It's a very freeing experience. That's what you're looking for when you're an actor, is you want to find those guys that help you get to where the character needs to be. It's comfortable, and that's the best way. You certainly [don't want] somebody that comes in and tells you, "This is what I want." [James] lets you go, and then he kind of guides you. He gives you the keys to the car, and he lets you drive. And I have to say — this is just me saying from a spectator's point of view — that might be what I attribute to the excellent performance that John Cena gives, is the fact that he met James Gunn, and James allowed John to find John Cena, the actor. We all got to witness it on Peacemaker. And he went to levels, and he was able to hit notes within that performance that were very revealing and revolutionary. I think we have to not only attribute that to John, but the fact that James created that place where he felt safe to pull it off. So that's the best part about working on Peacemaker. I think the world of James Gunn, he's just amazing. And Jennifer, his wife, is wonderful, they're wonderful people. He's a real pal. However, has the DCU seen the last of Patrick in Gunn's franchise? Not necessarily, as the actor teased, "No, we haven't. Certainly, that doesn't mean that there couldn't be down the road, and who the hell knows?" Patrick also revealed how he even learned that he was coming back, "Hell, I didn't even know I was coming back for season 2 of Peacemaker, until I ran into Steve Agee when I was walking my dogs up in the hills up here." Steve Agee, who plays John Economos, got to break the news to Patrick, as he shared, "I ran into him, and he said, "You know you're coming back for season 2. And I said, "No, I had no idea. How's that possible?" And he told me, and I went, "Wow!" So, s--t, I would welcome the opportunity." Robert Patrick: I'm at a stage of my career right now where I've got the good fortune of working with some very, very talented people. I've done two shows now with Taylor Sheridan, 1923 and Tulsa King. He's certainly got a lot of projects out there. James is going to have a lot of projects out there. I'm a gun for hire, man, so if the suit fits, I'll wear it. I'm ready to go. There are currently no plans for Peacemaker season 3, but that doesn't mean Patrick couldn't show up in other DCU projects down the line. With alternative realities still at their disposal, anything is possible.
