PORT HARCOURT – The Rivers State Government through the Ministry of Health, in partnership with Christian Blind Mission are set to flag off a 3-Day Free Medical Surgery on Hydrocele for adult males who are affected by the disease.

Speaking on the medical intervention, the Director Medical Services Rivers State Ministry of Health, Dr. Vincent Wachukwu noted that the 3 day free surgery initiative will start September 17 and end September 19, 2025 at Kelsey Harrison Hospital 32 Emenike Street, Mile One axis of Diobu in Port Harcourt City Local Government Area of the State.

Dr. Wachukwu explained that hydrocele is a fluid-filled sac around the testicle that causes scrotal swelling, common among infants due to developmental reasons, while adults usually develop the condition as a result of injury or infection, warning that untreated hydrocele could damage reproductive organs.

He added that the medical intervention is part of several efforts to reduce out of pocket expenses on medical care for residents across the State.

The Director in a statement signed by the Press Officer, Ministry of Health, Alete Ednah, noted that many men delay or avoid treatment due to financial constraints and cultural beliefs that link the condition to spiritual causes.

He said, “When we look at why men die with hydrocele, it can be tied to the fear of financial involvement in the treatment or surgery. Patients also neglect medical treatment because of traditional beliefs of spiritual invocation or a spell.”

Dr. Wachukwu further called on citizens of the State to take advantage of the intervention and also try to imbibe the culture of routine health checks to prevent avoidable health challenges.
