Rising NRL star Jonah Pezet signs two-club deal in massive coup for Broncos

Pezet is signed with the Storm until the end of 2029 but has a clause in his contract that allowed him to explore his options given Melbourne halfback Jahrome Hughes recommitted to the club earlier this year. Now Code Sports is reporting the 22-year-old playmaker will head to Parramatta in 2026 on a one-year deal before taking his talents north and joining the Broncos from 2027. Pezet, who impressed filling in for Hughes in the qualifying final, will partner Mitchell Moses in the halves at the Eels and play under coach Jason Ryles. But in a major boost for the Broncos, Pezet is set to be Brisbane’s next long-term halfback, taking over from Adam Reynolds, who is expected to retire at the end of next season. Pezet’s signing is a coup for Brisbane and coach Michael Maguire, who will have Pezet partner with Ezra Mam in the halves, adding the talented playmaker to a team already brimming with talent including fullback Reece Walsh. The Canberra Raiders and North Queensland Cowboys were believed to be the other teams in the mix for Pezet’s signature. “If I’m Jonah Pezet, you want an opportunity to be the guy and be in a position where (the team) looks to be on the rise,” former NRL player Justin Horo said on SEN. “If you leave a system like the Melbourne Storm, you want to tick some boxes. “You have a premier playmaker and experienced veteran in Mitch Moses to pair up with. “Pezet played really well at the back end of the season. I think Parramatta tick more boxes than any other team that’s been linked to him.” Pezet’s agent Braith Anasta told NRL 360 earlier this month a “huge couple of weeks” were coming up as his NRL future was decided. “He loves Melbourne, he went there for a reason, he’s loved everything he’s done there and it’s positioned him into the player he is right now,” Anasta said. “But he’s also more than ready. He’s been so patient. How long can he keep waiting?” Pezet’s departure is a blow to the Storm but won’t come as a surprise as he looks to cement himself as a first grade player. The Storm have farewelled veteran forward Nelson Asofa-Soloma and now the futures of Ryan Papenhuyzen and Cameron Munster are the next agenda items for the perennial contenders. Melbourne are also planning for the future — veteran coach Craig Bellamy is contracted for 2026 but is being pursued by the Gold Coast Titans. “Parra might have their noses in front but it wouldn’t surprise me if he stays because there’s a lot going on in Melbourne and they’ve got a lot of moving parts at the moment,” NRL journalist Brent Read said on Triple M of the Pezet situation. “You’ve got the Papenhuyzen situation where he’s off contract at the end of next year. The club might decide to let him go early if he wants to go to R360. You’ve got the Munster situation with Perth hovering around. “The Storm are juggling a lot of balls at the moment, and then you’ve got the coaching situation as well. I’m sure Jonah would love to know who the coach is going to be next year.” “They’ve got Mitch Moses locked in, Isaiah Iongi (fullback) who’s a gun and an absolute freak and then they’ve got two good hookers (Ryley Smith and Tallyn Da Silva),” the Daily Telegraph’s Carayannis said. “You look at that spine and if they sign Pezet, it’s probably the most settled 1, 6, 7 and 9 long-term going forward in the competition so I can understand the attraction there.” Read all the Jonah Pezet contract details at Code Sports
