Riot police stream into stadium as England game paused after warnings of violence

Riot police streamed into the Rajko Mitic Stadium during England’s clash with Serbia on Tuesday evening.

England continued their World Cup qualifying campaign in Belgrade on Tuesday evening – with warnings about potential flashpoint’s. There had been violence between the two sets of fans when the team teams opened their Euro 2024 campaign against each other.

And just after the hour mark, police streamed into the stadium after Serbian fans started to clash. Videos appeared on social media of riot police making their way into the home end where the violence had started.

Small skirmishes between Serbian fans had started to break out after, according to ITV, political disagreements between fans.

Serbia’s World Cup qualifying campaign comes amid the backdrop of larger protests that are sweeping the country.

Protests were sparked by the collapse of a newly renovated railway canopy in Novi Sad that killed 16 people.

However, protests have been against President Aleksandar Vučić and his Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) as they demand accountability and snap polls.

Vučić, who has also been accused as having ties to Moscow, has labelled them as “terrorists”.

Vučić has also been linked to far-right football hooligans – with his own son, Danilo, has been photographed alongside notorious ultra bosses.

There were rumours Danilo had tried to join clashes with England fans in Gelsenkirchen last summer – Serbia were fined by UEFA €14,500 (£12,250) after objects were thrown and a provocative banner was displayed during the clash.

The skirmishes were quickly broken up by the police as children moved out of the general area by fans. Police then kept a heavy presence in the area, with images showing them keeping formation in the stands.
