Your nails do more than just looking good after a manicure, they are secret little detectives quietly revealing what is happening inside your body. From very subtle colour shifts to even texture changes, nail abnormalities can be a sign of anything from mild deficiencies to deeper health concerns. Let’s begin with the basic. Healthy nails should be smooth, slightly curved and of consistent colour. Any sudden change like ridges on the nails, brittleness, discolouration, can be the body’s wat of saying, hey, there is something off inside. 1. When texture tells a tale: Ridges and lines Verticale ridges, the ones that run from cuticle to the tip are often signs of ageing, almost like wrinkles for your skin. But deep horizontal lines, also known as Beau’s lines, could indicate temporary interupption in the nail growth due to illness, stress or high fever. Sometimes, they also appear after the body has gone through severe infection or chemotherapy. If these grooves appear suddenly, it’s worth checking in with a doctor. 2. Discoloration of nails, aka, codes for healthWhite or pale nails might be a result of anemia or poor blood cicrculation in the body. Yellow nails might hint at fungal infections, but persistent yellowing of the nails can also suggest respiratory issues or even diabetes. Bluish nails suggest low oxygen levels in your blood, sometimes caused by heart or lung conditions.Dark streaks or spots (especially if new) should never be ignored, they can occasionally point to melanoma, a rare but serious form of skin cancer. 3. Brittle, peeling, or split nails If your nails tend to break faster than you can even file them, the culprit could actually be nutritional deficiencies, most common ones are iron, zinc or biotin. Constant exposure to harsh detergents can also strip the nails of their natural oils and leave them feeling weak and flaky. Add more protein to your diet and stay hydrated while using cuticle oil to protect your tips. 4. Clubbing and curvature: When nails curve dramatically If your fingertips appear swollen and your nails curve over them like tiny domes, that’s known as nail clubbing, a possible sign of chronic lung or heart disease. It develops slowly and should always be medically evaluated.
