Author and TV presenter Richard Osman has confessed that he feels “uncomfortable” about a physical attribute that he shares with his son and offered him advice on how to approach it. Standing at 6ft 7in tall, the bestselling author of The Thursday Murder Club series has described himself as a “reluctant lighthouse” and suggested that he struggled with his height when he was younger. Speaking to the High Performance Podcast, Richard, who is known for TV game shows such as Pointless , Two Tribes, and House of Games, explained that his height means he’s “always on display”. Richard (who recently opened up about a health battle ) has two children , Ruby and Sonny, with his former wife . It appears his son has inherited his height, and Richard, 54, offered him some guidance in the form of “two choices”. He said: “So, I feel uncomfortable being tall, right, of being very tall, being 6ft7, right, and there’s no hiding away from it. You are always on display. You’re like…I would describe myself as a reluctant lighthouse.” He continued: “And my son is very tall; he’s not as tall as me, but at one point, it looked like he was going to be. And I said to him – and it’s advice I don’t take – I said you’ve got two choices when you walk in a room, right? “It’s either: ‘Who’s that tall guy?’ or it’s: ‘Who’s that tall guy who looks really uncomfortable about being tall?'” Richard once shared a charming anecdote about how he spent a day trying “not to flirt” with his future wife, actress Ingrid Oliver, when she guest-starred on his BBC quiz show House of Games . The couple were married in 2022. He recounted that, unlike most couples, he has a record of the first thing he said to his “soulmate”. Speaking to the Sunday Times Magazine , he disclosed how she first impressed him: “I’m looking for two rhyming answers.” He went on to say: “‘A musical instrument filled with rice played by shaking, and the capital of Venezuela’. Ingrid buzzed in. ‘Maracas and Caracas’. I was instantly smitten. She was beautiful, funny and clever.” In a further touching insight about the early days of their romance, when he was writing The Bullet That Missed – the third installment in The Thursday Murder Club series – Richard said he had her phone number that very night, and they’ve been in “each other’s pockets” ever since. The pair exchanged vows at Goodwood House, West Sussex, on December 3, 2022. In celebration of the special occasion , Richard posted on social media , describing it as a “magical, joyful day”. Elaborating further about his relationship on an episode of Desert Island Discs, Richard said he was “happy” with himself, has “beautiful” kids, and is with the woman he will spend the rest of his life with. He said: “That thing of competition and ambition, you soon realise that rocket fuel disappears and it’s about happiness and my kids bring me happiness and Ingrid brings me happiness.”
