Residents urged to join charity run and make every kilometre count in battle against cancer

A long-standing charity walk organised by Esperança contra el Càncer in Pego is set to evolve into a full charity run this year, thanks to the support of the local Sports Department. For fourteen years, the association has held a charity walk to raise funds for the fight against cancer. This year, the initiative takes on a new format as an organised race, in collaboration with the town’s Sports Department and the Dorsal 19 Athletics Club. Sports councillor Raúl Tamarit presented the event alongside the association’s president, Fernando Tamarit, and vice-president, Xaro Franqueza. They explained that the goal is to institutionalise the event and give greater visibility and support to the cause. A 5,000-metre course for runners Tamarit highlighted the role of sport in driving positive social change, praising the athletics club for designing a 5,000-metre course for runners and a 3,000-metre route for walkers. Both groups will gather on Sunday November 16 at Pla de la Font, with the starting signal set for 10.30am. Registration is available via www.somesport.com and participants are asked to make a €5 donation. “Beyond the sporting aspect, what truly matters is our commitment as a community,” Tamarit told . “Every kilometre represents support for those fighting this disease, for those who are no longer with us, and for their families.” He encouraged residents to take part and to back the daily work of Esperança contra el Càncer, which provides emotional and practical support to affected families — “teaching us the value of charity, strength, and hope.” Representatives of the association expressed their gratitude to the council for helping revitalise an initiative that began in 2011 and has grown into a symbol of empowerment and self-esteem for those affected. Gandia’s Run Cancer race raises €25,205 for research On Sunday November 2, more than 5,000 people filled the streets of Gandia for a new edition of the Run Cancer race and walk, which was organised by the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC) with the support of Gandia Town Council, the Provincial Council of Valencia, CaixaBank and the “la Caixa” Foundation. “This race was created to help and to promote healthy habits, since we already knew that nutrition and sport played an incredible role, not only in preventing the disease but also in recovery,” Evelyne Cieslak, who has been president of the local AECC board since 2023, told Euro Weekly News. Held under the slogan Gandia Against Cancer by Sklum, the event raised €25,205, which went entirely to oncology research projects. That year’s edition once again offered two options — a five-kilometre run and a walk — both starting and finishing at Plaza del Prado. The runners set off first at 11am, followed by the walkers.
