Clogging of drains with plastic waste has emerged as a major issue in many parts of the Corporation limits, causing concern among residents during the Northeast monsoon. Complaints have been pouring in from several wards that the stormwater drains remain uncleared, resulting in frequent overflow and stagnation during rains. Residents said that during even moderate showers, drains overflow onto roads and enter houses in low-lying areas, creating unhygienic conditions and mosquito breeding. They pointed out that most of the blockages are due to plastic carry bags, bottles, and other non-degradable waste dumped into the drains. Though the monsoon has already set in, desilting and cleaning of major and minor drainage channels have not been completed in many localities. “Every year we face the same issue, but the work begins only after flooding occurs,” said a resident of Surampatti. Councillors from various wards have also urged the Corporation to expedite desilting works and take stringent action against those dumping garbage into drains. Residents have sought a continuous cleaning schedule and proper waste management to ensure free flow of rainwater and prevent flooding during the monsoon.
