Resident Evil Requiem developers have teased a new horror system unlike anything we have seen before, one that will play with your emotions.
Capcom has planned a strong 2026 for its Resident Evil franchise, with Requiem releasing across all platforms, including the Switch 2. The anticipation for the upcoming title is exceptionally high, and the latest tease from the developers has brought even more excitement. Learn more about what the devs stated about Requiem’s new horror system below.
Resident Evil Requiem Has a More ‘Old School’ Feel to It
Spotted by MP1ST, Resident Evil Requiem’s director, Koshi Nakanishi, and producer Masato Kumazawa mentioned the new horror system during a recent interview with FutureGamesShow. The developers first spoke about how Resident Evil 4 Remake and Village are more on the action side of the series, and “Requiem is different”, more on the lines of RE7 or RE2 remake. The developers mentioned that we can call it “old school Resident Evil,” which features exploration, backtracking, and more.
The developers elaborated that the upcoming title features core elements from the Resident Evil franchise, including combat, exploration, puzzle-solving, and resource management. Resident Evil 2 and 7 “reflect a typical game design approach” for the series, where the horror tension isn’t at its maximum for the entirety of the playthrough. Instead, it features dynamic pacing, where players will find a really “tense horror sequence,” and then there will be a bit of catharsis from that through peaceful exploration or combat.
Resident Evil Requiem Will Be a Rollercoaster Ride
However, there’s a difference with Resident Evil Requiem, as the developers have implemented a new horror system that they cannot reveal more about at this time. To give us an idea, Nakanishi stated, “think of the difference between the tension and the release being a certain sort of size of wavelength as it were of that curve.” He wants to make the “distance between the two aspects bigger than ever before in the series”, so that it becomes a “complete rollercoaster ride”.
Nakanishi is very excited about when players finally understand what he was trying to say about the system. He concluded, stating, Resident Evil Requiem’s new horror system is “definitely going to play around with your emotions a lot.”
In other news, a recent claim states that Resident Evil 5 Remake is not in development. Additionally, the upcoming Resident Evil movie’s tone is more in line with that of Resident Evil 4.
