Mac Jones helped bring the 49ers to the top of the NFC West with a thrilling overtime win over the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night.
But prior to kickoff, his day began on a jarring note.
The quarterback was on the balcony of his hotel in Marina del Rey when he spotted a dead body floating in the water, according to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini. Jones told his teammates what he saw and 911 was called.
As the 49ers got onto the team bus, they watched a coroner’s van and investigators pull in.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s department said they are still investigating the incident.
If Jones was the least bit rattled by what he saw, it didn’t show on the field. The ex-Patriots signal-caller threw for 342 yards and two touchdowns without an interception in San Francisco’s 26-23 win over LA on the road.
Jones, playing in his first season with the 49ers, made his third start in place of the injured Brock Purdy. It’s unclear if the 27-year-old will start in Week 6 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
“They brought me here to play as a backup and that’s my job,” Jones told reporters after the game. “Brock’s the starter of this team. Right now, he’s dealing with something. And for him to go out there last week and play, when he probably wasn’t at full health, it shows that he cares about this team. I’m just trying to get some wins for him so it helps us down the line. At the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about. I’ve been in his position. I’ve been a starter, and you want your backup to go in there and win because at the end of the season, that could be the hit-or-miss between the playoffs or not.”
