Report by Monday or Face Arrest – Attorney General Warns Chairman Wontumi

The Attorney-General, Dr. Dominic Ayine, has confirmed that charges against Bernard Antwi Boasiako, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), commonly known as Chairman Wontumi, and his company, Akonta Mining, have been finalized and signed.
In a statement made on Friday, October 3, 2025, during President John Dramani Mahama’s engagement with civil society organizations on illegal mining in Accra, Dr. Ayine announced that Chairman Wontumi has been instructed to report to Accra by Monday, October 6, 2025, where his charges will be formally read. Failure to comply, he warned, would result in an immediate arrest.
“The charges against Chairman Wontumi and Akonta Mining have been completed and signed. He must appear in Accra by Monday, October 6. If he fails to report, I will have no choice but to issue a warrant for his arrest and read his charges to him,” Dr. Ayine declared.
This move follows an ongoing investigation into Akonta Mining’s operations, which has attracted significant public attention. Earlier, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, confirmed that investigations are actively underway. She also disclosed that another individual connected to Akonta Mining has already been arrested in relation to the matter.
According to DCOP Donkor, Chairman Wontumi had cooperated with investigators on several occasions but had recently postponed further engagements due to reported health issues, a claim supported by his legal team. Despite this, she assured the public that the investigation remains on track and that updates on its progress would be provided.
As part of the investigation, the CID also apprehended and took statements from a business associate of Wontumi’s, identified only as “Akuoko.”
Chairman Wontumi was first summoned by the CID on May 26, 2025, appearing with his legal counsel, including former Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame and former Asante-Akim North MP Andy Appiah-Kubi. Despite the growing scrutiny, Wontumi has repeatedly denied any involvement in illegal mining activities.
Speaking on his TV station, Wontumi TV, he stated:
“I want to categorically tell the public that I am not involved in galamsey. I operate a large-scale mining company, Akonta Mining, which complies with all legal requirements. All the necessary documentation is available, and I will provide it upon request.”
He also emphasized his willingness to fully cooperate with investigators, stating:
“I urge the authorities to let the law take its course. I am committed to assisting them with their investigations and ensuring that everything is done according to the law.”
As the investigation continues, many are waiting to see whether Chairman Wontumi will comply with the Attorney-General’s order or face the legal consequences of his failure to report.
