The LSU Tigers suffered a disappointing loss last week on the road, falling victim to the Vanderbilt Commodores by a final score of 31-24. With the loss, the team dropped to 5-2 on the season and will be fighting for their College Football Playoff lives moving forward this season. Brian Kelly has started hearing his name brought up as a potential hot seat candidate. While LSU moving on from him would be a major surprise, it has become a topic of conversation. According to a report from Chris Hummer of CBS Sports, LSU would be much more likely to make a change when it comes to offensive coordinator Joe Sloan than it would be to part with Kelly. “I think if anything happens at LSU, you could probably be talking about a coordinator change on the offensive side of the ball. I think Joe Sloan’s a great coach, but change happens in these situations. That’s the coaching change I’d circle.” Hummer said. Kelly is one of the top head coaches in college football. He has been unable to lead LSU to the heights that he wanted to when he first joined, but he has only been the program's head coach since 2022. In the close to four years he has been the head coach of the Tigers, Kelly has led the program to a 34-13 record. He has led them to three straight bowl games and has won all of them. However, LSU deciding to fire him would be a complete shock at this point in time. Assuming the Tigers don't fall completely apart down the stretch of the season, Kelly will likely finish out the year. It's also very likely that he'll be back for the 2026 season. The same may not be quite as certain for Sloan.
