Report: 49ers Pursuing Big-Time Trade Before Tuesday Deadline

The San Francisco 49ers have already been hit with more than their fair share of injuries to begin the 2025 NFL season. Just like last year, the team has been unable to catch a break on that front. Brock Purdy has missed most of the season, George Kittle has missed a chunk of games, Nick Bosa is out for the season due to a torn ACL, and there are plenty of other players who have missed time as well. With the 2025 NFL trade deadline coming up on Tuesday, the 49ers have been a team mentioned a lot in the rumor mill. That is the case once again with a new report from an NFL insider. Head coach Kyle Shanahan of the San Francisco 49ers stands on the field during the first half of an NFL football game against the Chicago Bears, at Levi’s Stadium on December 8, 2024 in Santa Clara, California. Dianna Russini of The Athletic has reported that the 49ers have shown interest in trading for Miami Dolphins pass rusher Jaelan Phillips. She also mentioned a few other teams that have explored the option as well. “Miami has received interest from the Eagles, 49ers, Patriots and others on OLB Jaelan Phillips (The Dolphins are looking for at least a third-rounder in return),” Russini wrote. “They’re also getting calls on DE Bradley Chubb and OLB Matthew Judon.” Phillips is one of the more impactful players who could be traded ahead of the deadline on the defensive side of the ball. Throughout the nine games he has played this season, Phillips has recorded 25 total tackles, three sacks, and a fumble recovery. In his 55-game NFL career, Phillips has racked up 177 tackles, 26 sacks, a forced fumble, three fumble recoveries, an interception, and seven defended passes. Depending on the price tag, San Francisco should absolutely pursue Phillips. He would be able to come in and help fill the void that was left by Bosa’s injury. But if they don’t have to overpay, the option would be a good one for San Francisco. Expect to hear more about the 49ers leading up to Tuesday’s deadline. Phillips is a name to keep a very close eye on. For more on the San Francisco 49ers and general NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.
