Repair work on 49 schools begins in Logar

PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) has launched reconstruction and repair work on 49 schools at a cost of 36 million afghanis in central Logar province, an official announced on Monday.

Shahpur Arab, spokesman for the Education Department, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the structures were being reconstructed in Mohammad Agha, Khoshi, Baraki Barak and Kharwar districts and Pul-i-Alam, the provincial capital.

He added: “The reconstruction project includes fundamental renovation of the buildings and all annexes of 49 schools, painting, construction of classrooms, boundary walls, handwashing facilities, concrete dustbins, digging of water and septic wells and installation of solar power and water supply systems. Once completed, the project will provide a suitable learning environment for around 30,000 students.”

According to Arab, the project would also equip another school with all necessary office supplies as well as desks and chairs for students.

Rohullah, a resident of Pul-i-Alam, told Pajhwok he was happy that dozens of school buildings were being reconstructed with the support of UNICEF.

However, he stressed that standard buildings should also be constructed for schools in other districts of Logar, where students are still studying in the open air and as a result they are facing numerous challenges.
