Remorse is not enough, say Janu, Geethanandan

Adivasi leader C.K. Janu has said that the tribespeople will never forgive former Chief Minister A.K. Antony or those who justified the police action against them during the Muthanga land agitation of 2003.

Her comments to the media on Thursday (September 18, 2025) came against the backdrop of Mr. Antony expressing regrets over the alleged police brutality during the agitation at a press conference in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday (September 17, 2025). Ms. Janu also criticised the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and other parties, which were in the Opposition then, for their role in escalating the crisis.

M. Geethanandan, Adivasi Gothra Mahasabha leader, who was part of the agitation along with Ms. Janu, said that the Congress and the Left parties should apologise to the tribespeople. He alleged that though a peaceful solution was possible, it was not pursued by these parties. Mr. Geethanandan also alleged that K. Muraleedharan, the then Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee president, and K. Sudhakaran, the then Forest Minister, as the main culprits behind the police action.
