A men’s shed group has identified a potential new home at Hosiery Park in Troon. Troon Men’s Shed want to take on the existing pavilion building at Hosiery Park and redevelop the space for their new base. Agent in the planning proposal, seeking alterations to the existing building, is Victoria Wight and the applicant is Owen Neil, from Troon Men’s Shed . A supporting statement said: “The project involves the redevelopment and conversion of the existing pavilion building at Hosiery Park, Troon. “Formerly used as football changing rooms, the building will be adapted to provide a new permanent home for Troon Men’s Shed.” The statement continues: “At the heart of the building is a welcoming community space, accessed directly from the entrance foyer, supported by a workshop, kitchen, toilets (including an accessible facility), a small office, and storage areas. “Together, these spaces will provide a fully inclusive environment where members can socialise, share skills, take part in practical projects, and enjoy community activities. “The facility will reduce isolation, improve wellbeing, and strengthen local ties, while also offering opportunities for use by other community groups.” Historically, the building functioned as changing rooms for the neighbouring football pitches used by Troon Football Club. Today, the building lies empty. The facility is “dated,” says the supporting statement and “in need of upgrading” to bring it up to current building standards. The supporting statement continues: “The redevelopment of the site aims to enhance its role as a hub for social interaction, skill development, and community engagement, while respecting the semi-rural character and visual amenity of the area.” Troon Men’s Shed was formed in March 2024 and has a sole purpose of advancing the social needs, health and wellbeing of men in the local area. It offers opportunities for men in the Troon area to meet and undertake creative, physical, purposeful and recreational activities, reducing isolation by creating a community environment that brings local people together. The planning statement adds: “The proposals would create a practical space where members can take part in activities and double up as a social space for members to come together to chat and plan events in an inclusive and friendly atmosphere where everyone is welcome and supported.” The proposals are listed as ‘pending consideration’ on South Ayrshire Council’s online planning portal and a decision on them is expected in December.
