Red Wings homecoming spoiled by Rangers

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings returned to the friendly confines of Little Caesars Arena, where they had won five in a row, following an extended road trip. But the New York Rangers continued to feel right at home on the road. The Rangers scored a pair of goals in a 58-second span in the third period to gain separation Friday and Jonathan Quick made 31 saves in a 4-1 victory. The Red Wings (9-6-0), coming off a 3-2-0 trip, have dropped two in a row, scoring only one goal in the process. The Rangers (7-6-2) improved to 7-1-1 on the road. J.T. Compher scored the Red Wings’ lone goal to tie it at 1-1 at 11:06 of the first period, his third of the season. Parked by the side of the net, he fired in a pass from Mason Appleton. But the Rangers responded with the next three goals. Rookie Noah Laba snapped a 1-1 tie at 4:52 of the second period, scoring from the net front against Cam Talbot. Artemi Panarin (7:29) and Alexis Lafreniere (breakaway at 8:27) gave the Rangers some breathing room in the third. The Red Wings went 0 for 4 on the power play. The game featured the league’s two oldest goalies in Quick (39) and Talbot (38). Patrick Kane returned after missing nine games with an upper-body injury. He didn’t figure in the scoring but had a glorious chance in the second period when Quick came out of his net to play the puck but Kane deflected it. Kane couldn’t deposit it into the open net, however. Will Cuylle opened the scoring at 6:44 on the power play. The Red Wings host the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday (1 p.m., FanDuel Sports Network).
