Red Wings’ shuffle No. 2 power play unit and say ‘Let ’er rip!’

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings’ second power-play unit doesn’t get a lot of minutes, but it can be a little more productive. That’s why coach Todd McLellan has shuffled some parts around, in an effort to get more pucks to the net. Axel Sandin-Pellikka moves from the point to the left flank and Albert Johansson will man the point tonight against the New York Rangers at Little Caesars Arena (7 p.m., FanDuel Sports Network Extra). “Axe has a really good shot,” McLellan said. “He’s played off that flank over in Sweden, and that unit doesn’t get that many minutes. So, simplifying some things, getting them to think about shooting the puck maybe a little bit more.” The Red Wings rank ninth in the league on the power play at 22.7 percent and most of the damage has been done by the first unit (eight of the team’s 10 goals). Sandin-Pellikka has only 17 shots overall in 14 games but expects an uptick in that area. “I think up top you have a little more time, and on the flank, you got to make plays a little quicker,” Sandin-Pellikka said. “They told me to shoot the puck whenever I get the chance. If I see a lane, I’m going to rip it.” Johansson has extensive experience on the power play from his time in Sweden and during his second season in Grand Rapids but has logged a total of 4:10 on the man-advantage during his time in Detroit. “Probably just going to keep it simple, move pucks and get pucks to the net, but it’s fun to get the opportunity up there,” Johansson said. “We have the other unit with (Patrick) Kaner, and those guys are so skilled, so maybe they will start most of the power plays and we will come in and get like 40, 45 seconds after. Usually, good things happen when you just keep it simple and get pucks to the net.”
