The Boston Red Sox’s infield for next season remains up in the air with question marks at nearly every position. Though there continue to be rumors that the Red Sox will trade one of their young outfielders this offseason, Boston’s outfield is set with some combination of the remaining players. The infield is a whole other story. Triston Casas will be returning from a serious knee injury. Alex Bregman is expected to opt out of his contract and test free agency, with the middle infield consisting of some combination of Marcelo Mayer, Kristian Campbell and Trevor Story if he opts into his contract. The Red Sox reportedly expect Story to opt into his contract and return next season. Still, MassLive’s Sean McAdam believes that the Red Sox should move the two-time All-Star over to second base for next season and have Marcelo Mayer play shortstop. “Assuming Trevor Story decides to opt-in, I wonder if the Red Sox are tossing around the idea of moving him to second and having Marcelo Mayer as their shortstop,” McAdam wrote Sunday. “Story’s metrics weren’t good this past year and a move to the other side of the infield might cover up some range issues as well as declining arm strength. Of course, it was an easier sell for the team then, with Xander Bogaerts as the incumbent shortstop; this would mean giving up his position to someone with 44 games of big league experience.” Story put together his best season since 2019 this year, slashing .263/.308/.433 while leading the Red Sox with 25 home runs, but struggled defensively. Story posted a negative-9 outs above average this season, and his 19 errors tied for the most among American League shortstops. Shortstop is Mayer’s natural position, and by moving Story over to second base, the team can maximize the young star’s defensive potential and try to reduce their defensive miscues for next season.
