Will Schwarbombs light up the Green Monster again? Well, right now, there are plenty of rumors about how the Boston Red Sox want to bring Kyle Schwarber back. However, the number staring down at them to get him to Fenway Park is around $150 million. Not cheap for sure. But didn’t Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com talk about Boston’s love for Schwarber? “Cora has been clear about his admiration for Schwarber, who the Red Sox love,” – so something might be cooking there. Schwarber smashed 56 home runs for the Phillies—fifty-six! And he is leading the National League with that number and proving once again that few can launch a ball like him. But the truth is that the Phillies’ payroll is bursting at the seams, and even a bat as powerful as his is not immune to the business side of things. And if the Phillies can’t decide on a long-term extension, then the Red Sox might have an opening. But the Red Sox, as insiders say, have to dig deeper into their pockets, because the Phillies won’t let go cheaply. Now, maybe five. If you want to pry him away from Philadelphia, you’ve got to get super uncomfortable. If you think you’re getting him on a three-year deal and the Phillies won’t match, you’re mistaken. It might take four or even five years. They are sitting 23rd in home runs. Plus, not to mention Casas’s knee injury doesn’t help, because who knows when he will be back and in which form. Right now, the Red Sox need to prep, and they need power badly. So, from where it seems, Schwarber is the one-man power plant they need. The concern, though, is fit. Schwarber’s best spot is DH, and locking that role down for the next half-decade would tie Boston’s hand when it comes to flexibility. Then again, this is Kyle Schwarber we are talking about—the same person who had lit up Fenway during his stint in 2021 and left fans wanting more. He has got the pop and the attitude to be in the Boston Red Sox clubhouse. And Alex Cora had once mentioned, “impacted a lot of people in a short period of time.” So the question is now whether the Boston Red Sox are willing to take the plunge or if they will play it safe. If Kyle Schwarber doesn’t end up back in Boston, and given his future with the Phillies seems to be on thin ice, then for sure someone else is going to take the plunge. Because he just wrapped up a monster season, and yes, he might be in his 30s, but he has plenty of gas, and everyone needs the “veteran energy” in the clubhouse. But if Boston and the Phillies can’t pay the price, then maybe the Detroit Tigers can! Yes, you heard that right, and while Tigers fans are already busy talking about Tarik Skubal and the trade rumors, Jim Bowden of The Athletic threw them a bone—by naming the Tigers as one of Schwarber’s best spots alongside the Phillies and the Mets. He even suggested that the Tigers should be bold enough to get in the mix if they are ready to start spending again. It’s not as crazy as it sounds. The Detroit Tigers need power, and Schwarber’s bat would give them the middle-of-the-order threat they simply don’t have right now. Sure, he strikes out a ton, and Detroit has seen enough of that issue pop up in the second half, but he is a player who can hit 40+ homers and bring real postseason experience—and that may be worth the gamble. The fit is a little tricky, given the Tigers don’t have a full-time DH, and they are not moving Riley Greene to left field anytime soon. So maybe with a little creativity and a lot of cash, they could make it work.
