The Boston Red Sox’s focus over the next few weeks will be on the postseason. With a challenging path coming up, starting against the New York Yankees on Tuesday, the Red Sox have as good a chance as any team in the American League to win it all.
When the season ends, they’ll be faced with a few difficult decisions. The main one will be centered around star Alex Bregman, who has played great baseball for the Red Sox throughout his first year in Boston. Bregman has the opportunity to opt out of his deal, with many expecting him to do just that.
The same can be said for Pete Alonso of the New York Mets, despite his team not being in the postseason.
As the Mets look for potential replacements for Alonso if he decides to move on or the team doesn’t want him back, Sports Illustrated’s Zach Pressnell named Bregman as a possible replacement for him.
“This idea plays hand in hand with the Vientos idea. While signing Alex Bregman away from the Boston Red Sox wouldn’t replace Alonso at first, it would replace him in the lineup. Vientos would slide to first and Bregman would slot in at third base.
“This idea makes sense whether or not the Mets re-sign Alonso. Given their ownership, the Mets could chase two mega-contracts with Bregman and Alonso. But if they whiff on Alonso, it wouldn’t be surprising to see them aggressively pursue Bregman,” he wrote.
Red Sox Don’t Want to Lose Alex Bregman
It almost feels safe to say that if the Boston Red Sox want Bregman back, that’ll be what happens. However, given where things stand around Major League Baseball, nothing is ever guaranteed.
If Bregman were to receive an offer from the New York Mets that completely surpasses the Red Sox’s offer, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him go in that direction. The harsh reality of the situation for the Red Sox is that unless they want to blow Bregman out of the water with an offer, the Mets could do it.
Regarding whether the New York Mets will lose Alonso and need to go after somebody like the Red Sox slugger, he made it sound like he wants to stay in New York for the foreseeable future.
Could Mets’ Pete Alonso Be Leaving?
He also admitted, however, that the organization has to feel the same way about him. After they didn’t give Alonso the money he was looking for last winter, it wouldn’t be too surprising to see that happen once again this time around and lose him entirely.
“Nothing is guaranteed, but we’ll see what happens,” Alonso said, per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. “I’ve loved being a Met. Hopefully, they’ve appreciated me the same.”
“We’ll see what happens with everything,” Alonso said. “Again, there’s no guarantees. But I’ve appreciated it here. The fans have been awesome. I’ve grown up in this organization, and what I’ve done here, I’m really proud of the mark I’ve left. I want to be the best teammate and the best player I can possibly be — not just for the people here, but for the franchise and for the fans. It would be great, but we’ll see what happens.”
“The biggest thing is I want to win,” Alonso said. “I know we didn’t this year, but we had the right pieces, I think. We just didn’t do it. At the beginning of the year, you just want to have the best possible chance to hold up the trophy at the end and see yourself being a champion. That’s why I do this. I want to be on top of the mountain. I want to win a World Series. For me, that’s the ultimate goal.”
If so, Bregman could be a great addition.
