Reader Opinion: Keene's leaders are wasting our money, by Stephen Seraichick

Taxpayers of Keene, are you angry yet? You should be ripping!

We have so called entitled leaders in our city that don’t know how to hold the line on spending and they don’t have a clue on how a frugal budget should work for our family called “Keene.”

When I listen to the big wheels on the radio or read about their take on what needs to be done to fix our infrastructure and Keene’s overall livability, it is one excuse after another. Meanwhile the cost of the downtown project continues to skyrocket.

Your money grows on trees, according to our city leaders. Your hard-earned money is an endless pipeline of dough for the city to do whatever the hell it likes.

I predicted a year ago that the downtown infrastructure project would hit the $24 million-plus mark and I was right on. This was not a difficult prediction to make given the lack of fiscal understanding our governing body possesses.

How many city councilors have a Bachelor of Science in business administration? How many have MBAs? Additionally, this group is making complex decisions that require engineering backgrounds as well. How many have engineering degrees?

I’m going to bet practically all of them don’t have the backgrounds necessary to make the decisions that are necessary to carry out their fiscal and city planning responsibilities, therefore we’re screwed.

I’ve emailed my Ward 2 councilors on several occasions. They couldn’t be bothered to reply to me. I’m a thorn in their sides, I get it. I ask relevant questions shame on me. (Ed Haas gets a pass on this, however.)

I’ve talked about neighborhood fireside chats with my Ward 2 councilors. I’m sure they’re saying, “are you kidding?” They have better things to do like relaxing by the pool or sipping on a cold one, so please leave us alone.

This council and its chiefs bought the Stantec shtick and merrily drank the cool aid. I suppose, in an obtuse kind of way, this could solve the housing problem in Keene. When no one can afford to live here anymore, the “For Sale” signs will blanket the city like snow.

So, Keene taxpayers forgive our city’s governing leaders for they know not what they do.
