Reader Opinion: All US speech is free, no matter who says it, by Edward Murdough

With a gleam in one eye and a tear in the other, the old soldier remarked, “I may not like what you said, but I will defend your right to say it with my last breath.”

That is what it means to understand freedom of speech. That is what it means to be a true American. You can attend the rallies or the protests. You can burn the flag or wave it, but if you cannot separate what was said from the act of saying it, you are not a true American.

If you can condemn one attack on free speech yet condone another because of what was said or who said it, you are not a true American. Do not claim to be an American Patriot. At best you are a holier than thou moral absolutist. At worst you are a hypocrite and a fraud.
