Rawalpindi, AJK and Fata record wins

KARACHI: Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Rawalpindi and Fata emerged triumphant on the final day of the fourth round of the Hanif Mohammad Trophy on Friday.

With only one round remaining — beginning Monday — Faisalabad lead Group ‘A’ with two wins and as many draws, while AJK are second. In Group ‘B’, Fata occupy top spot with three victories, ahead of Karachi Blues.

At Rahim Yar Khan’s Abbasia Sports Complex, AJK pulled off a remarkable come-from-behind victory — their first of the competition — after dismissing Hyderabad for just 79 in pursuit of 116.

Usman Yousaf spearheaded the attack with figures of 4-16, while Hasnain Shamir, Zaman Khan and Hasan Raza shared six wickets between them.

Earlier in the day, AJK resumed on 76 without loss, still 47 runs in arrears, but an opening stand of 135 between Hasan Raza (95 off 126 balls, 15 fours, one six) and Hasnain Nadeem (44) gave them the platform. The middle order wobbled, yet Awais Akram Minhas (56 not out) ensured a lead of over 100 as AJK reached 238 all out. Hyderabad’s Jawad Ali claimed 7-95 for a match haul of 10 wickets, but his efforts proved in vain.

Rawalpindi notched their second win at the National Bank Stadium in Karachi, chasing down a modest 68-run target inside 13.3 overs. Yasir Khan blasted 48 off 40 balls with six boundaries and two sixes.

Earlier, DM Jamali’s rearguard second innings lasted 126.2 overs as they erased a 257-run first-innings deficit before being bowled out 67 runs ahead. Dawood Khan, resuming on 69, battled to 145 off 275 balls with 20 fours. Rawalpindi’s Mubasir Khan returned excellent figures of 5-83 in 47 overs, while Saad Masood picked up two scalps.

At UBL Sports Complex, Fata consolidated their position at the top of Group B by securing a third win, defeating Multan by 81 runs. Chasing 213, Multan slumped from 16 without loss overnight to 132 all out in 53 overs. Asif Afridi and Hayatullah picked up three wickets apiece, while Shahid Aziz struck twice.
