Rapper and Netflix star Ghetts has appeared in court as he's charged with allegedly causing death by dangerous driving. The award-winning grime musician, real name Justin Clarke-Samuel, allegedly failed to stop after he hit a pedestrian in east London. Yubin Tamang, 20, was hit on Redbridge Lane, Ilford, at around 11.33pm on October 18, Barkingside Magistrates’ Court heard. Police had attended Ghetts' address early on October 19, prosecutor Varinder Hayre said. The 41-year-old musician appeared at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court on Monday wearing a grey prison tracksuit as he remains in custody. He had initially been charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving. His indictment was changed after Mr Tamang died on October 20. Ghetts appeared in court today to confirm his name, date of birth and address. He was remanded in custody and will next appear in court at the Old Bailey on November 24. The rapper has had a successful music career, having played Glastonbury last year. Ghetts' success stretched outside the UK as he has also toured abroad. In 2008, he was also nominated for a BET Award for Best International Act: UK. His music has also featured on national radio, including BBC Radio 1. The musician has millions of plays on music streaming platform Spotify and picked up best male act at the Mobo Awards in 2021. He has also been nominated for a prestigious Mercury Prize. Last year, Ghetts picked up the Mobo Pioneer Award for his significant contribution to British black culture. He has released five albums to date, with his latest Forbidden Frequencies (with Rude Kid) being released in December last year. Aside from music, has also ventured into an acting career, having starred in Netflix drama Supacell about a group of Londoners with super powers. The series was released last year and Ghetts starred in five episodes. He had also starred in 2018 crime thriller The Intent2.
