Jodhpur: The Rajasthan High Court in Jodhpur has given bail to the rape accused Asaram Bapu for six months. The bail has been given to the self-styled godman on medical grounds. Asaram Bapu is currently under life imprisonment for a case of sexual assault. The Supreme Court lawyer Devdutt Kamat represented him and Deepak Chaudhary represented the government. In addition PC Solanki represented the victim’s side. This time he filed for bail on medical grounds. A division bench of the Rajasthan High Court including Chief Justice Sanjeev Prakash Sharma and Sangita Sharma provided him with the interim bail on Wednesday. What’s the case? In August 2013 a 16-year-old girl accused Asaram of sexual harassment at his ashram near Rajasthan’s Jodhpur. As a result the parents of the victim filed a complaint which led to his arrest in August 2013. After almost five years in 2018 a Jodhpur court convicted the godman of a minor girl’s rape. This led to his life imprisonment under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) and the Juvenile Justice Act. The allegations sparked further in October 2013 when one of the women who happened to be his former disciple accused him of repeatedly assaulting her from 2001 to 2006 at his ashram in Ahmedabad’s Motera. Conviction of 2023 In January 2023 a Gandhinagar court convicted Asaram for raping two sisters from Surat. This became the second case of the same matter and it even involved his son Narayan Sai. Out of the two victims the elder sister mentioned that Asaram assaulted her repeatedly. On the other hand the younger one accused his son Narayan Sai of repeated sexual assaults from 2002 to 2005. Rajasthan High Court Now the Rajasthan High Court has given an interim bail of six months under medical grounds citing his age and deteriorating health.
