Hearts will reportedly knock back any approach from Rangers to try to bring Derek McInnes to Ibrox. The Glasgow giants are searching for their fifth manager in four years after parting company with Russell Martin in the wake of Sunday’s 1-1 draw away to Falkirk and Record Sport has revealed that chairman Andrew Cavenagh will hold a crunch meeting with Light Blues chiefs in London on Thursday to plan their next move. Steven Gerrard has once again been linked with a return to Ibrox with the likes of Sean Dyche, Mark van Bommel and Danny Rohl also said to be in the running. Jambos boss McInnes is also seen by some supporters as an outstanding candidate but the Edinburgh Evening News report the capital club are set to knock back any bids to prize the Scot away from Edinburgh. McInnes only arrived at Tynecastle from Kilmarnock on a four-year deal at the end of May and has made a flying start to life in Gorgie, with Hearts sitting two points clear at the top of the Premiership after seven games following Craig Halkett’s last-gasp winner in the Edinburgh derby against Hibs on Sunday. McInnes was heavily backed by the club in the summer transfer window, including fresh investment from minority owner and Brighton supremo Tony Bloom and his Jamestown Analytics recruitment firm. The report adds that ex Aberdeen gaffer McInnes is very happy at Hearts and is focused on continuing their fine start to the campaign when they travel to his former side Killie after the international break. The 54-year-old previously turned down the top job at Ibrox back in December 2017. The then Pittodrie boss helds talks over the vacancy in the wake of Pedro Caixinha’s dismissal but ultimately opted to remain in the Granite City, leading the Dons to a second place finish ahead of Rangers at the end of the season. Despite Hearts’ holding a two-point lead over Celtic at the Premiership summit, McInnes is adamant the best is still to come from his team. He said: “The season is still in its infancy but we are getting plenty of encouragement from the players with what they are giving us. “I still think we are going to get better as we go along, but it is important that we recognise it is the performances that are the biggest indicator of trying to get results. “It is not just having 20,000 support or not giving maximum effort because that is a given. We want to play every game like a derby. “What we do need at times is to show that quality.” Follow Record Sport on Twitter , Facebook and Instagram for all of the up-to-the minute breaking news, video and audio on the SPFL, the Scotland national team and beyond.
