Rangers fans target Stewart and Thelwell as stewards try to confiscate banners amid defiant Danny Rohl vow

Danny Rohl insists he remains driven to building a Rangers side capable of beating continental giants after Roma inflicted a club record seventh straight European loss - as furious fans trained their sights on Patrick Stewart and Kevin Thelwell. The German watched his side beaten 2-0 with first half goals for the Serie A side coming from Matias Soule and captain Lorenzo Pellegrini . The result means the Light Blues remain anchored to the foot of the 36-team table of UEFA’s second tier competition - the worst sequence of defeats in continental competition in the club’s history. And on a miserable night, fans unveiled banners with sporting director Thelwell and CEO Patrick Stewart's faces in targets. Stewards also wrestled with fans to confiscate some of the banners. Gers and Nice are the only two teams without a single point after four games. They play Braga at home later this month followed by a trip to Robbie Keane’s Ferencvaros in December. The defeat comes on the back of Sunday’s Premier Sports Cup semi-final loss to rivals Celtic with a trip to Dundee in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday before the international break. Rohl said: “When you play at this level in Europe it’s about the small details. You have to do everything right to be at a team at the top in the Italian division. It’s not easy but we have to work on it because in the future we want to win games like this at home. “There wasn’t much in the first half but they were twice very clinical. Then we changed something at half time to create more pressure on the ball and until the 75th minute we were in the game but you need to score to get the momentum to come back. But they deserved to win because they did a lot of things right. “We spoke in the morning about Roma’s set pieces and that they always overload the first post and then the second contact. In such a game it’s important you are prepared for set-pieces. We have to work on this but generally there were some moments we wren’t sharp enough, especially on our counter pressing and we have to improve on that. “We found more space in the second half and were a little bit more flexible. I spoke to the players and said at this moment in our journey we have to make small steps and on Sunday we need to try and make it three wins in a row in the league. “I get more of an impression of the players and it’s helpful for me. It’s important, when you come straight in and you have big games you have to make decisions that help but now the focus is on Sunday.” On strengthening in January, he added: “We will sit together in the next couple of weeks and see what we can do and what is possible.” Keeper Jack Butland is adamant Gers can still clinch a play-off place with Braga up next at home later this month followed by a trip to Robbie Keane’s Ferencvaros before the end of the year. They have Porto and Ludogorets at the start of next year. Butland said: “We still have every chance (of qualifying). We still have every belief when we see the stadium how it was before the game. It's not something we've experienced as this particular group just yet. I’ve seen crazier things happen. I saw two years ago in more of a group stage phase, us come from third on the last day to win the group. Last year we really excelled in Europe and there's still 12 points to play for. That's got to be the mindset of the group.”
