How practice squad rules work
NFL teams can keep 16 players on the practice squad, six of them with unlimited experience—there’s also an extra spot for members of the International Pathway Program. However, those players are essentially free agents. If another team wants to sign them, they can at any point. The only restriction is that the signed player must stay on the roster and receive his salary for at least three weeks.
Who is Cody Schrader
Schrader played college football at Truman and Missouri before going undrafted last year. The 5-8, 202-pound back signed with the San Francisco 49ers after the draft. When the Niners cut him in late August, the Rams claimed Schrader off waivers. He spent most of his rookie season as a healthy scratch for gamedays. But Cody Schrader played one game, with one carry and six yards. This year, Schrader didn’t make the initial 53-man roster, but was signed back to the practice squad. He was elevated for the gameday and played four special teams snaps during the Rams’ win over the Houston Texans on Sunday. After the game, he reverted back to the PS.Now that Schrader is gone, Ronnie Rivers is the only other running back on the Rams’ practice squad.
Jaguars role
In Jacksonville, Cody Schrader arrives as the fourth running back on the depth chart, behind Travis Etienne, plus rookies Bhayshul Tuten and LeQuint Allen.
