Railway Workers Union of Ghana Announces Nationwide Strike Over Unpaid Salaries

The Railway Workers Union of Ghana (RWU) has announced a nationwide strike and picketing on September 30, 2025, due to 12 months of unpaid salaries.

In a letter to the Ghana Police Service, the union said arrears dating back to October 2024 have caused financial hardship for workers, resulting in broken homes, health issues, and children being forced out of school.

Despite repeated appeals, the Ministry of Transport has not started negotiations. “By Monday, 22nd September 2025, if no concrete measures are taken, we shall proceed to act under Sections 160 and 171 of the Labour Act,” warned General Secretary Benjamin Essuman.

Railway workers from Tema, Accra, Kumasi, Takoradi, and Tarkwa plan to march through key state institutions in Accra, including the Ministry of Transport, Parliament, and the Railway Development Authority, ending at the TUC headquarters.

The union assured the police that the protest would be peaceful and requested security support for the exercise.
