Raiders Owner Gives Curious Comment on Embattled Coach's Job Status

The Las Vegas Raiders are going into their bye in Week 8 looking for answers on how to fix the season after a rough 2-5 start in head coach Pete Carroll’s first season. More News: Ravens Sign QB to 53-Man Roster Amid Lamar Jackson Update In Week 7, the Raiders got a crushing wake-up call when the rival Kansas City Chiefs blanked them in a 31-0 rout at Arrowhead Stadium. Las Vegas has many problems on both sides of the ball, but the offense is the most glaring weakness. The Raiders have been held to nine points or fewer in three of their first seven games. Those aren’t the results many expected after the team made Chip Kelly the highest-paid coordinator in the league at $6 million per season. Davis’ comment is curious, as he didn’t exactly defend his offensive coordinator. Instead, the vague message means the Raiders could make a move on Kelly when the front office decides it’s no longer “too early.” Per Russini, Davis isn’t rushing Carroll to make an immediate turnaround. He had success waiting on the Las Vegas Aces to brush off a rough start before winning the WNBA championship this year. “Now, he (Davis) hopes that the same model — hire the right people, let them do their jobs, trust the process — can translate to his beloved Raiders team led by Pete Carroll,” Russini wrote. It’ll be interesting to see how much patience Carroll will have with Kelly if the offense continues to struggle in the back half of the season. Carroll has voiced displeasure with some of Kelly’s offensive play-calling through the first seven games. Las Vegas was expected to have some bumps early in the season with a new coaching staff and new quarterback Geno Smith working together. But Sunday’s goose egg against the Chiefs showed a troubling lack of progress, and the Raiders know they need to have more success on offense.
