Communities across Rai Coast are stepping up with clean-up programs, reflecting stronger collaboration between villagers and the Rai Coast District Development Authority (RDDA). In Gwarawon, residents mobilised under the leadership of local councilor Fosne Buro to clean and maintain the airstrip. Their effort ensures that aircraft can continue landing safely, delivering vital supplies and evacuating patients when needed. Minister for Labour and Employment and Rai Coast MP, Kessy Sawang, said such actions show the power of community involvement in driving change. “The government can bring in resources, but without local effort, projects will not last. What we see here is ownership in action,” she said. Clean-up campaigns have also been linked to other RDDA initiatives, including school infrastructure upgrades and the reopening of rural airstrips. The programs are designed not only to improve facilities but also to encourage unity and responsibility at the village level. Residents said the clean-ups have practical benefits, from safer airstrip access to cleaner school grounds and stronger community pride. The RDDA has urged more communities to follow the example set by Nankina and Gwarawon. “When people mobilise and take responsibility, services can reach even the most remote areas,” the RDDA said.
