Evan Greenfield is a do-everything player for a Norris football team that’s one of the best stories in the state this season.
The Titans grabbed plenty of attention when they beat Omaha Skutt by 46 points in the first game of the season. Norris has since vaulted all the way to No. 2 in the Class B rankings and remains undefeated with a 6-0 record.
Norris dominated Lincoln Standing Bear 42-0 on Thursday at Union Bank Stadium.
“To start off the year and win against Skutt, it was awesome,” Greenfield said. “Then we get Gretna and just keep the train rolling. It’s a great feeling.”
Norris hasn’t had a close game yet, but if it does, Greenfield might just be throwing or kicking a field goal for the winning score.
He’s the quarterback, kicker, kickoff specialist and the punter.
On Thursday, he threw for 160 yards and two TD passes. He also successfully kicked all six extra points, handled kickoffs and was the punter, including a fake punt that went for 30 yards to extend what ended up being a TD drive for a 35-0 lead.
Greenfield was the kicker before he became QB1 for the Titans this season.
“I wouldn’t want it any other way,” Greenfield said. “Anything that I can do to help my team, I just would love to do it.”
Greenfield also plays soccer and basketball.
“I just started kicking field goals when I was in third grade and ever since just kept working at it,” he said.
On Thursday, he threw a 51-yard TD pass, and then had little time to catch his breath and kick.
“When we have a long throw or a long run and I have to run down the field, it’s kind of hard,” he said. “Thankfully, with kicking you just kind of stand there and kick.”
Standing Bear was sitting pretty late in the first quarter when it forced a fumble and put together a long drive all the way to the 9-yard line. But it couldn’t come away with points, and Norris led 7-0 after the first quarter.
Norris took control with a 21-point second quarter. Norris’ scoring drives in the second quarter were 91 yards, 83 yards and 34 yards.
It started when Greenfield found Alec Small down the sideline for a 51-yard TD reception for a 14-0 lead. Then Greenfield had another TD pass just before halftime to Chris Garner Jr.
Norris has one of the best offenses in the state, but was down five starters on offense this week due to injuries.
“We didn’t see a lot of drop-off today, which was awesome,” Norris coach Trevor Sedlacek said.
At 6-0, Norris has already equaled its win total from a 6-4 record last year, and is putting itself in a great spot for playoff seeding and a better chance to get to at least the second round of the playoffs.
“We’re all about feeling good, but we’re never pleased,” Sedlacek said. “I told the guys the old Bill Walsh standard – champions act like champions before they’re champions. And obviously I’m not saying that’s going to be the case, but we’ve got to act like we’ve been there and we just improve every single day.”
The big regular-season game for Norris against Waverly (5-0) is in two weeks.
Small rushed for three touchdowns and 80 yards.
Standing Bear (2-4) has already matched its two wins from last year, when it was 2-7.
