Mangaluru: The academic future of 530 students at the Government First Grade College for Women, Puttur, is facing uncertainty as the institution has been directed to vacate its current premises by the end of December 2025.
College to vacate for taluk hospital
The college, which has been functioning from the old taluk office building since 2017, has been asked to vacate the premises to make way for the taluk hospital. A team of officers recently visited the campus and conveyed that the building would be demolished by year-end.
Principal Vedashri Nidya confirmed the development, saying that while a new campus is under construction at Bolwar, work has made little progress despite the project’s deadline lapsing in July.
New campus construction delayed
The new building at Bolwar, sanctioned on 1.53 acres of land, had its foundation stone laid in March 2023. The project, estimated at ₹8 crore, is being executed under the supervision of the Karnataka Housing Board.
However, with construction work running far behind schedule, students and staff have been left without clarity on where classes will be conducted once the existing premises are vacated.
Students raise concerns
Students said that classes are currently being conducted in makeshift arrangements with inadequate infrastructure. They highlighted the lack of basic facilities, pointing out that there is no dedicated sickroom and only 10 washrooms for the entire student body.
Many expressed concern that shifting mid-year without a ready alternative would gravely impact their education, particularly for those from economically weaker sections.
MLA assures action
Local MLA Ashok Kumar Rai said he had instructed the contractor to expedite the construction and complete the new campus at the earliest. College authorities have also appealed to him to find an interim solution to ensure students’ studies are not disrupted.
With the December deadline looming, the fate of hundreds of students rests on whether authorities can accelerate the construction or provide a temporary campus. Until then, uncertainty continues to cloud the academic future of the women’s college in Puttur.
