Push for $2bn revamp to Aussie icon revealed

The Herald Sun’s Jay Clark revealed the grand plans for a redevelopment to the southern side of the stadium, which would see the Shane Warne Stand modernised along with several other key amenities within the sporting colosseum.

Clark reports the proposal would see congestion at the ground eased, brand new social dining areas and more expansive passageways in the northern section of the venue.

Should the planning for a development be approved, the Shane Warne Stand’s construction wouldn’t start until after 2030, and would be completed in stages. It is expected to take between two to three years for it’s full completion.

The Shane Warne Stand is also expected to provide 180 degree-views over the south-eastern part of the city, which overlooks Yarra Park.

Public amenities, roof lighting and seating will also receive major upgrades.

The AFL is hopeful of keeping the Grand Final and major events at the MCG if a 70,000 capacity is maintained while construction continues, as per their contract with the AFL.

If the revised capacity falls below the contractual figure however, the marquee match could be shifted interstate.

Clark reports a new hotel at the back of the Warne stand is also being strongly considered, but not yet finalised.

The proposed new capacity for the MCG would see it re-enter the list of the top 10 largest stadiums, climbing as high as fifth. Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, India is the largest in the world with a capacity of 132,000.

The proposed $15 million business case is jointly funded by the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC) alongside the Victorian government. The Victorian government though could be required to fork out $1 billion in one of the state’s biggest construction spends on record.
