One of the strangest teams over the past five years has been the so-so regular-season, yet never-die-in-playoffs Miami Heat. Since the 2019-20 season, the Heat have advanced to the Eastern Conference finals three times. Two of those trips ultimately extended into the NBA Finals — once in 2020 and then again in 2023. They came up short each time, unfortunately. But Miami’s never-die approach to the postseason has been hailed as one of the best season-related stories over the past few years, considering they usually aren’t a strong regular-season team. When it comes to the playoffs, though, they mutate into a different kind of animal and do not back down (the last two seasons aside, of course). All of that said, however, while long-time Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra has been the head of the snake for much of this time, there may be an end nearing sooner than many thought.
Pulling the Ripcord After this Season May Be Erik Spoelstra’s Best Option
Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra may have to perform magic this season lead his team into the playoffs
Let’s not get it twisted; Spoelstra is at the very top of the list when it comes to the “who’s who” of NBA coaches — the top-ranked, undisputed, best head coaches across the league. Spoelstra has earned the respect from players and coaches alike in the NBA, and rightfully so. He’s a true leader of men, a tactician with intricate play schemes and ATOs (after-time-out plays), and a coach who never backs down from holding his players accountable. For those reasons, and many more like them, Spoelstra is one of the most esteemed coaches in the league.
Despite the Heat’s struggles lately, Spoelstra remains more than just a top-respected coach in the league. He’s still simply one of the best, if not the best. He shouldn’t be blamed for the circus that was Miami’s season last year. Additionally, injuries had plagued the team since their 2023 finals run. Those injuries included lengthy absences from key players such as Jimmy Butler and Tyler Herro.
Even now, with the 2025-26 NBA season just around the corner, things are not looking good for the Heat. They’re not expected to be a contending team this year. A playoff team is likely, given the current state of affairs in the East, where some high-profile stars are unavailable for their teams. But a championship contender? No, it’s not there for them. So, where does this leave Spoelstra?
Is Spoelstra’s exit from Miami on the horizon?
There was talk during last season on a few critically acclaimed sports talk shows that, given Miami’s numerous troubles, the best future for Spoelstra might be to transition from the floor to the suit. The idea of Pat Riley stepping down and Spoelstra taking his spot could be an option for the franchise. This idea was floated during the Butler saga, when he was in and out of suspension. He was eventually shipped off to the Golden State Warriors.
