Captain Hook In Purgatory (Inspired by Sir James M. Barrie) (The court exonerates Hook of his crimes. He is allowed passage to the next world. He requests that no one mourn him. The Penitents bid goodbye to him. Hook boards the Jolly Roger, and it sails into the heavens, never to return again. End of Part 2.) When I am gone, my good and faithful friends, Let me lie down in meadows of green ... When the curtain finally does descend, Do not celebrate me by any means ... Do not gather for rituals or wakes: I am not worthy in this way ... Do not write elegies for me own sake— Just think of me once a day. Weep if you must, but not for long, I ask: It is the way of folk that they forget ... Do not bring me flowers in a pot or flask: I’d rather have them now before the sunsets ... Yet, favor me if you have the time: Go alone to your room and close the door, Then pray for all souls, especially mine That God will absolve us once more. To die would be an awfully big adventure ... To live would be an awfully big one too ... To have one’s good works live on in time Would be a delight to procure ... To find and fulfill one’s destiny Is the greatest deed one can do ... Indeed, this would be at journey’s end, An awfully big adventure! JON RIPLEY O’BRIEN One day the ocean Had given its all There was no more to give And the fishing boats in Gloucester and New Bedford Grew cobwebs Yesterday I read about an endangered bird A genus and species I can’t pronounce She garnered worldwide attention CNN, Fox, the BBC, Pravda and even Al Jazeera sent reporters Flocks of ornithologists descended like vultures With camaras clicking and their battery powered shutters Opening and closing at lightning speed For one final glimpse Sometime thereafter the rain stopped The experts couldn’t explain why There were new variables Unlike anything they had seen before, they said There were postulations and best educated guesses But everywhere the relative humidity hovered below 30% Fires broke out across the globe like a pandemic Incinerating what was once With no water No fertile land Crops for people Or animal feed Extreme hunger became the norm Hunger led to desperation Desperation led to wars Wars led to death Death led to silence Silence led to nothing STEPHEN SERAICHICK Rapt Regard Have you ever noticed the outlet plug- Has a surprised expression on its face? That your toothbrush standing in the tray- Alike a sentinel at attention in its place? Most of us see animals or other images- Viewing fluffy clouds in outer space. When you retain the vision of a child- Mundane items become full of grace! Focusing intently in each moment- Brings pleasure in each ordinary case! ESTHER M. CANTUA
