Prosecutor says prison guards brutally beat inmate to death, acted like a ‘gang’: Several prison guards at the Marcy Correctional Facility effectively turned into a gang on the night of Dec. 9, 2024, according to Onondaga County District Attorney William Fitzpatrick. They brutally attacked an inmate, Robert L. Brooks, Fitzpatrick said, showing a depraved indifference toward him that ultimately led to his death. Not so fast, say the attorneys defending three of those guards, who are now on trial for Brooks’ murder. They say that while Brooks’ death was tragic, each of those guards was not present for the entire attack, didn’t have an equal role in it and didn’t necessarily understand the totality of what was taking place. Jurors heard opening statements in the trial on Tuesday.

Naithan George takes over as SU’s point guard, says ‘It’s my job to create’: Before transferring to Syracuse last spring, Naithan George put up some pretty impressive numbers at Georgia Tech, averaging 12.3 points, 4.2 rebounds and an eye-catching 6.5 assists as a sophomore. But George insists he doesn’t judge himself on the number of assists he racks up. “Just judging off of just how many assists you get isn’t a reflection of a point guard,” he said. As he sees it, his job as a point guard is to make sure the Orange’s offense hums like a finely-tuned race car.
