Prophet Magaya’s hotel, stadium up for auction following High Court ruling on debt

HARARE – It never rains but pours for prominent clergyman, Prophet Walter Magaya.

Just ten months after being exposed for allegedly faking his O-Level results, the Prophetic Healing and Deliverance (PHD) Ministries leader is reportedly in hot soup again following a High Court writ of execution. Magaya now risks losing his hotel and stadium.

The four-star standard hotel facility, several cluster houses or lodges, a stadium, and ancillary developments, owned by PHD Ministries is set to be auctioned following a High Court writ of execution.

According to court records under Case Number SH3294/25, Chinese national Li Xiu Yun successfully applied for the sale in execution of the ministry’s rights and title to Stand 168 of Prospect, a 3.84-hectare property located at 168 Smuts Road, Prospect, Waterfalls in Harare.

The property’s impending sale represents a significant financial and legal setback for PHD Ministries, which in recent years expanded its footprint through property and business ventures under Prophet Magaya.

The development comes as the Magayas face mounting legal and financial challenges.

In June this year, GetBucks Microfinance Bank Limited filed a High Court application seeking to liquidate the personal estates of Walter Magaya and his wife, Tendai, over an outstanding debt of US$420,140.72.

The application followed a High Court judgement issued in October 2024 ordering the couple, along with their company Planet Africa (Private) Limited, to pay the outstanding sum plus 10% monthly interest from September 11, 2024, until settlement.

Court records indicate that efforts to recover the money have been unsuccessful. Movable assets attached at the Magayas’ residence were released after The Walter Magaya Family Trust lodged an interpleader claim, while items seized at Planet Africa were claimed by PHD Ministries.

The principal debtor’s immovable property, a 3.2323-hectare piece of land in Salisbury held under Deed of Transfer number 4076/2018, was declared executable and slated for sale on March 28, 2025.

The sale was, however, halted after Planet Africa voluntarily entered corporate rescue proceedings ahead of the auction date.

GetBucks argued that with execution avenues frustrated and no further known assets, the Magayas are insolvent. A nulla bona return from the Sheriff, confirming the absence of attachable assets, has already been issued.

The bank also claims statutory demands for payment were served but ignored.

In its application, the bank nominated Noreen Chikaka of Reign Management Consultancy (Private) Limited as liquidator, citing her professional experience.

It argued that liquidation would serve the interests of creditors by halting further debt accrual and compelling the Magayas to disclose their financial affairs.

The application further contended that the couple may attempt to abscond, requesting that their passports be surrendered.

“The 1 (Walter) and 2 (Tendai) Respondent may want to leave the country to evade the law since they have no assets and it is in the interest of justice that the court should order the two to surrender their passports,” part of the application reads.

GetBucks insisted liquidation was the only viable option to protect creditors’ interests, alleging that the Magayas’ conduct reflects deliberate evasion of obligations and possible concealment of assets.

Meanwhile, the news comes just weeks after Magaya and his wife were gifted luxury cars and US$100,000 for upkeep by flamboyant tenderpreneur Wicknell Chivayo for works he credited to Magaya, including construction of the Heart Stadium, which is now reportedly also up for auction.
