Prominent international businesswoman files defamation suit against online publishers

A respected international businesswoman, Ms. Niharika Handa, has filed a defamation lawsuit in Ghana’s High Court against online publishers alleged to have circulated false and malicious claims about her and her son, Mr. Punar Vasu Handa.

The lawsuit, filed through her legal counsel, Sory & Partners @ Law, seeks GH¢5 million in damages, a mandatory retraction and apology, as well as a perpetual injunction restraining the further publication of defamatory material.

Ms. Handa, who has significant business interests in hospitality, telecommunications, and real estate, previously served as Managing Director of a leading hospitality management company, overseeing projects for major global hospitality brands.

She also serves as a board member of an international resort company with operations across 25 countries.

In a statement following the legal action, Ms. Handa emphasised that the case is not only about safeguarding her personal reputation but also about protecting the integrity of journalism in Ghana.

“This action is not only about protecting my reputation, but also about upholding accountability in journalism. False publications harm not just individuals but also the confidence of international investors who view Ghana as a trusted destination for business,” she stated.

The defendants have been served and are required to respond within eight days. The case will be heard before the High Court of Justice in Accra.

Alongside the court filing, Ms. Handa issued an official statement, describing the allegations as “completely untrue and intended only to damage our reputation.” She reaffirmed her confidence in Ghana’s judicial system to uncover the truth.

She further urged the media and the public to act responsibly in their reporting and discussions.

“I respectfully urge the public and media to avoid spreading unverified claims that only perpetuate harm. My family and I stand firm in truth and integrity,” she said.

The matter has already sparked conversation within media and business circles, given its potential implications for press accountability and Ghana’s investment climate.
