Priyamani Doesn’t Understand ‘What Is Pan-India Actor’, Says ‘We Should Stop Using This Term’

Priyamani is one of the most loved actresses in both the South and Hindi film industries. The actress, who has worked in both regional and Hindi cinema, has recently opened up about how she doesn’t understand the use of the term ‘pan-India actor’ and shared that she believes the world should stop using the term ‘pan-India.’ In conversation with HT, Priyamani said, “We’re all Indian at the end of the day. What is this pan-India? I don’t understand. You get work in other industries, and that’s a good thing — but you don’t call someone a ‘regional actor’ when they come from Bollywood to the South,” and added, “For years, actors from both sides have worked across languages. Why are we suddenly labelling people now?” Priyamani, while giving examples of actors like Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, Prakash Raj, Dhanush, and many others, mentioned that these stars have been working in different languages for years without the tag of ‘pan-India actor’ and added, “It doesn’t matter which language we work in — accept us for who we are and for the characters we play. This sudden trend of actors wanting to overly use the term is funny.” Earlier, in a chat with us at News18 Showsha, Priyamani had spoken about how the South industry values punctuality more than Bollywood and said, “The working style is different in both. In the South, they generally start on time. They will start at 7 or 8 a.m. When we say 8, we actually start at 8 no matter what. Here, I have noticed that when you say 8, people arrive at that point of time.” Meanwhile, on the work front, Priyamani will soon be seen in The Family Man Season 3 alongside Manoj Bajpayee. Priyamani made her acting debut with the 2003 Telugu film Evare Atagaadu and went on to appear in films such as Raam (2009), Puthiya Mukham (2009), Raavanan (2010), and Pranchiyettan & the Saint (2010). She earned widespread acclaim for her performance as a rape victim in the Tamil romantic drama Paruthiveeran (2007), winning both the National Film Award for Best Actress and the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Tamil. She also won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Malayalam for Thirakkatha (2008) and the Filmfare Award for Best Actress – Kannada for Chaarulatha (2012). In recent years, Priyamani has appeared in notable films including Idolle Ramayana (2016), Jawan (2023), Article 370 (2024), and Officer on Duty (2025), continuing to showcase her versatility across multiple film industries.
