The police on Thursday arrested a 38-year-old man, who had been offering coaching for kabaddi and volleyball, for alleged sexual assault on four minor girls.
M. Arun Kumar, a resident of SRS Nagar near Sulur, was arrested based on a complaint lodged by the headmistress of the survivors’ school.
The police said Kumar had been running a private sports training centre at Sulur, offering coaching for kabaddi and volleyball. The survivors had been going to the centre for coaching under him.
The four girls, aged between 14 and 16, complained to the headmistress of their school on September 19 evening that the accused sexually assaulted them on different occasions for the past two months.
The headmistress alerted the Child Line about the incident, following which an inquiry was held. Based on the statements of the girls, the headmistress lodged a complaint against Kumar at the All Women Police Station, Karumathampatty.
The coach was booked for offences under Sections 9 f (whoever being on the management or staff of an educational institution or religious institution, commits sexual assault on a child in that institution), 9 (l) (whoever commits sexual assault on the child more than once or repeatedly) read with 10 (punishment for aggravated sexual assault) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. A team headed by inspector Ramadevi arrested him on Thursday. He was remanded in judicial custody.
