Primark shopper shares simple tip to get free item at the till

A clever shopper has discovered how to stock up on an essential wardrobe item without spending a fortune. Most garments you purchase rarely come with a proper way to hang them once you’re back home, leaving you quickly running short. Purchasing clothes hangers can prove surprisingly costly, depending on where you browse. Whilst certain retailers occasionally allow customers to keep the hanger when a garment is displayed on one, they’re frequently left behind. Nevertheless, one resourceful shopper has revealed they take things a step further by posing a straightforward question at their local Primark store, which proves incredibly helpful at home. Writing on the popular Facebook group, Extreme Couponing and Bargaining, the shopper revealed: “Just a tip for anyone desperately in need of coat hangers. Go to Primark and ask for some!”. [The staff] gave me a bag full and told me if I need any more to go in and ask, as they get charged to dispose of them!”. The Mirror previously reported that numerous people were thrilled to discover this tip, with one group member responding: “Better than going into landfill!” Another commented: “I’m so glad I’ve just seen this. I literally just been on Amazon looking at coat hangers!” A third shopper chimed in: “This is a great idea. I don’t understand this need for perfectly aesthetic clothes hangers that match – they’re just there to do a job and hardly anyone is going to see them anyway! !” Another person added: “If there’s nothing wrong with them then this is a great thing from Primark. Customer gets hangers for free and they don’t have to deal with the waste.”, reports the Mirror . One individual, claiming to be an employee at the discount clothing store, advised: “I work there! Just ask we will definitely give you them.” Another retail worker reminded shoppers to “just ask” if they want a specific type of hanger. They stated: “Don’t forget that they also have trousers hangers and the ‘one peg’ ones from the men shorts. [Nine times out of ten] they are buried but it’s worth the ask.” Some pointed out that this trick isn’t exclusive to Primark, with another retail worker sharing: “We will give hangers in Poundland too!” However, it appears not every clothing shop is as accommodating. In the post, one woman recounted her experience at Next, stating: “I purchased from Next and asked to keep the hanger, they charged me 15p!” The Mirror reported in July 2024 that the high street fashion retailer had started charging a 15p fee for hangers in a trial at four of its UK stores in a bid to reduce plastic use. A spokesperson for Next previously told The Mirror: “We are trying to reduce the amount of plastic being used to help protect the environment. Therefore, we retain the hangers and reuse them across the business. The small charge goes towards the production of more hangers.”
