Prestea Huni-Valley MP leads free breast cancer screening and counselling for women and girls

The Member of Parliament for Prestea Huni-Valley, Robert Wisdom Cudjoe, has organised a free breast cancer screening and counselling exercise for women in the constituency. The event, held at the Himan Community Centre, formed part of efforts to raise awareness about breast cancer and promote early detection—an essential step in successful treatment. The exercise aimed to encourage regular check-ups and emphasised the importance of early detection in combating breast cancer, which remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in Ghana. “The month of October is for breast cancer awareness, so today in Prestea Huni-Valley, we are at the Himan Community Centre, where we've gathered a lot of women. We're doing screening, we're counselling them, and we're also giving them direction that whenever they see any abnormal signs in their breasts, they should run to the nearest hospital for proper verification and appropriate direction,” the MP said. Mr Cudjoe also announced that, in collaboration with mining companies in the area, the exercise would be extended to cover girls in the three Senior High Schools within the constituency. “In collaboration with the mining companies in this area, we'll also visit all three Senior High Schools to carry out a similar exercise. The traditional authorities have also requested that we extend it to the basic schools. So within these two weeks, that’s what we're going to do to help our women and girls in the constituency,” he added. The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Prestea Huni-Valley, Matthew Ayeh, also supported the initiative. Nana Mutty Ankama II, Gyaase Panyin representing the Divisional Chief of Himan-Prestea, commended the MP and the MCE for the exercise. He revealed that the traditional leaders had initially planned a similar activity, and the intervention by the MP and MCE had eased that burden. He pledged the continuous support of the traditional authorities for such health initiatives and commended the women from the various communities for turning out in their numbers. "When we heard that the MP and the MCE were bringing the breast cancer screening to Himan, we were happy. Breast cancer is a deadly disease, and when you don't notice it on time, it can mess up your life. So this initiative can help with early treatment once a person is diagnosed with the disease. We also call on the various radio stations to carry out more education and awareness on the disease."
