President Mahama promises new stadia across regions, inspired by Tarkwa GoldFields model

President John Dramani Mahama has revealed that his government is preparing to roll out modern sports infrastructure across Ghana, with a focus on regions that lack standard stadia.

Speaking at a press engagement on Wednesday night, Mahama disclosed that the Ministry of Sports and Recreation is currently working on the design and costing of the new projects.

“We promised to build stadia in all the new regions and the regions that don’t have modern stadia. As I speak, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation is doing the design and costing, and the Upper East is one of the regions that has been captured to receive a new sports stadium,” he said.

The president cited the Tarkwa GoldFields Stadium as a model for cost-effective development, contrasting its $13 million price tag with the “hundreds of millions” government has historically spent on similar projects.

“Those of you who have been to Tarkwa and have seen the stadium know it is a standard stadium with a 10,000 capacity. If GoldFields built it for $13 million, then government too should be able to do the same,” Mahama noted.

To ensure quality and efficiency, Mahama revealed that the government has already contacted the architects and designers of the Tarkwa project with the aim of replicating it nationwide.

“We’ve asked them to identify the architect, the designers, and everybody who worked on the stadium, so that we can replicate it in other regions that don’t yet have stadia,” he concluded.

If implemented, the plan would mark a significant step toward addressing long-standing infrastructure gaps in Ghanaian sports and ensuring regional balance in access to modern facilities.
