President Mahama cuts sod for Big Push project in Volta region

In a significant steps to addressing the infrastructure challenges in the country, the long awaited bold Big Push initiative by president Mahama has been birthed.

The $10-billion “Big Push” project aimed addressing the nation’s infrastructure deficit, has been officially launched in the Volta regional Capital Ho on 16th September,2025.

In a colourful ceremony which was attended by hundreds of residents across the eighteen district of the Volta region including ministers, MMDCEs,traditional leaders, clergy , security personnel among others, the President cut the sod for the redevelopment works on the first set of roads under the initiative, the 117-kilometre stretch from Atimpoku in the Eastern Region to the Volta Region towns of Asikuma through Anyrawasi, Ho and Denu to Aflao.

Addressing the gathering,President Mahama said the project would serve as a model for other road projects under the initiative across the country.

“Today, we are delivering that bouncing baby, Big Push which had miscarriage in 2020 since we lost the election” Mahama said.

“I am the most campaigned politician because,I have campaigned on all parts of the country and I know almost all the roads across the country.The Volta Region has had some of the most neglected, abandoned roads in the country, and year in, year out, the chiefs have cried for repair and maintenance.” he acknowledged.

During his address,President John Mahama outlined the transformative potential of the ‘Big Push’, stating that, financial allocations have been made available to enhance fast infrastructure development across all sectors, with roads being a key focus.

Adding that, “The ‘Big Push’ is aimed to bridge our infrastructure gap and propel Ghana towards sustainable development.

He added that consideration had been made to involve more Ghanaian contractors in executing the initiative to ensure that the programme provided jobs and wealth to Ghanaians.

“We have given priority to Ghanaian construction companies because we believe that Ghanaian companies can do as well as foreign companies,” he noted.

“Once you have First Sky on the road, you can rest assured they will do a good job,” Adding that, once a good job is done, it will attract investors and more customers to the Volta serene hotel owned by First sky company limited.

President Mahama urged the public to bear with the contractors. Stating that, once the project is launched the whole country will become a construction site which might inconvenience Ghanaians.

President Mahama revealed that GH¢30 billion had been allocated in next year’s budget to support the ‘Big Push’ infrastructure project.

He said the substantial sum was in addition to the GH¢14 billion set aside in this year’s budget for the planned projects.

On his part,The Minister of Roads and Highways and the member of parliament for Adaklu constituency,Kwame Governs Agbodza,assured that,the local contractors have the expertise and are capable of delivery a good job to the good people of the Volta region and the country under the Big Push initiative.

Emphasising on the competency of the contractors, he noted that First Sky Group has been a known competent contractor and will deliver a good job.

Agbodza assured the people of the Volta region that, President John Dramani Mahama is deeply involved in delivery a quality job to the Ghanaian people.

He also expressed his gratitude to the president for his leadership and making this dream a reality.

“We at the Ministry have been guided to always prioritize the dignity and well-being of Ghanaians.

This road, and the entire ‘Big Push’ programme, is a testament to that very principle. We are optimistic that this project will be completed within the 24-month timeframe,” he said.

The minister urged the contractors to give opportunities to Ghanaian young graduates from universities in the country to add their skills to the construction of the roads across the country.

Meanwhile, Agbogbomefia Togbe Afede XIV, in a welcome address,expressed his profound gratitude to President Mahama for keeping his words with the people, saying the Big Push was a renewal of hope among Ghanaians.

In an exclusive interview with this reporter, he urged all contractors to deliver quality work to the people of the Volta region. Adding that, they must prioritise quality work delivery and must have deliver on the time frame given them.

He also urged the public to support and collaborate with the contractors.

The project when completed will improve traffic flow, ease the burden on commuters and motorists hence boosting economic activity across the region.
