Story by: Doreen Ampofo President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Dr. Richmond Afotey Nii Okle, a lecturer at the Beanstalk International Bilingual School (BIBS) in China, as Head of Investment and Tourism at Ghana’s Embassy in China. Dr. Nii Okle, who has served as Secretary to the NDC China Chapter from 2018 till date, assumes the position with a wealth of knowledge in finance and investments. He holds a PhD in Finance, a Master of Science in Finance and Investment, and a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and Statistics. He is currently Head of the Mathematics Department at BIBS in Beijing, China. In his new role as Head of Investment and Tourism at the Embassy, Dr. Okle’s core goal is to attract Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) from China into Ghana’s productive sectors to contribute to government’s 24-hour economy. He is expected to actively promote specific investment opportunities, special economic zones like the Ghana Free Zones, and Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) to Chinese companies and financial institutions. With bilateral trade between Ghana and China reaching a record high of $11.8 billion in 2024, Dr. Okle will participate in and organize more investment forums, roadshows, business seminars, and trade fairs in major Chinese cities to present Ghana as a premier investment destination. He will serve as the primary liaison for Chinese businesses inquiring about the Ghanaian market, providing accurate information on regulations, incentives, and procedures, as well as work to resolve systemic barriers faced by Chinese investors by engaging with both Ghanaian and Chinese government bodies. With a wide Chinese network, he will be seeking Chinese investment in the government’s ambitious $10 billion “Big Push” programme meant to address the country’s infrastructure deficit in the roads, railway, and energy sectors. In tourism, Dr. Richmond Afotey Nii Okle will foster connections between Ghanaian tourism service providers (hotels, tour guides, transport companies) and their Chinese counterparts to improve the customer experience for Chinese visitors. The role also requires him to market Ghana’s unique tourism products to the Chinese audience, emphasizing key attractions like heritage sites such as the Cape Coast and Elmina Castles, including cultural festivals.
