By Amos Harris Liberia’s President, His Excellency Joseph Nyuma Boakai, reaffirmed the nation’s unwavering commitment to global peace, sustainable development, and multilateral cooperation as the world commemorated the 80th anniversary of the United Nations (UN). Speaking at a ceremony held at the Booker Washington Institute (BWI) in Kakata, Margibi County, on Friday, October 24, 2025, President Boakai described the occasion as a moment of national pride and reflection on Liberia’s longstanding relationship with the global body. “As a founding member of this truly global organization, our decision in 1945 to sign the UN Charter in San Francisco was made with a deep sense of duty to humanity and to our common world,” the Liberian leader stated. “We celebrate with joy the UN’s global accomplishments as we reflect on Liberia’s proud history as a founding member of this respected organization.” The ceremony brought together members of the Cabinet, the United Nations Resident Coordinator, and heads of international organizations, members of the diplomatic corps, the Margibi Legislative Caucus, local government officials, traditional leaders, students, and civil society representatives. Delivering his keynote address under the global theme “Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development and Human Rights,” President Boakai emphasized that the UN remains a “beacon of hope and cooperation for all peoples and nations,” tirelessly upholding the principles of peace, equality, justice, and solidarity. He noted that Liberia’s history has been deeply intertwined with the ideals of the United Nations and reaffirmed the country’s resolve to remain a strong advocate for peace, security, and human rights. President Boakai highlighted the nation’s upcoming international role. “As we look ahead to Liberia’s term on the United Nations Security Council in 2026, we recognize the importance of collective action in addressing the world’s pressing challenges—from sustainable development and climate change to humanitarian crises and conflict resolution,” he said. The Liberian leader stressed that the country remains steadfast in supporting multilateralism, pledging that Liberia will continue to collaborate with the UN and regional organizations such as the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to strengthen regional stability and cooperation. “Liberia’s engagement with the UN has shaped both our foreign policy and strengthened our domestic programs,” he said, adding that his administration remains committed to implementing the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a focus on education, healthcare, economic growth, and climate action. President Boakai also extended appreciation to the United Nations Resident Coordinator, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and all partners who made the event a success, noting that Liberia’s continued progress depends on the collaborative efforts of government institutions, the diplomatic community, and civil society. He concluded his address with a renewed pledge to uphold the values of peace, human dignity, and social progress embedded in the UN Charter, while expressing optimism about Liberia’s growing leadership role in international affairs. “Together, we will keep working toward a future of prosperity, stability, and sustainable development for everyone, making sure that the UN’s vision stays at the core of Liberia’s foreign and domestic policies,” President Boakai affirmed. The event ended with cultural performances and solidarity messages from international partners, celebrating eight decades of global unity and reaffirming Liberia’s position as a trusted advocate of peace and multilateral cooperation.
