President Ali said his second term will be consequential

President Ali said his second term will be consequential Oct 30, 2025 Letters In just under five years, President Dr. Irfaan Ali has emerged as one of the most respected, genuine and serious leaders on the international, regional and hemispheric stage. Today, Guyana is not only an accredited and recognized member of the global community of nations but has become the engine of change to the global political system and the international status-quo. It has gained recognition as a prominent and important player on the international scene with Presidency Dr. Ali’s advocacy of policies to reduce global warning, food insecurity, fair trade practices by the United States and the other Global North (developed) countries, reduction of poverty, especially in Africa, an end to the three-year old Ukraine-Russian war and the genocide being committed against the Palestine in the Gaza by Israel. President Dr. Ali’s fearless approach to global problems and issues was evident in his address at the United Nations General Assembly (UN) 80th session on Tuesday September 23, 2025. After showering praise on the United Nations for its grand achievements over the years, the Guyana Head of State boldly and bravely called on the world leaders to respect the rights of small states, the need to safeguard humanity’s survival and progress. an end to the embargo on Cuba and the brutal gang violence that is ravaging Haiti’s capital of Port Au Prince and its suburbs. His Excellency told the UN audience of 194 world leaders that conflicts are raging as geopolitical tensions intensify, food insecurity worsened, displacement of people has grown, human rights abuses continued to be ignored, and climate change continues to threaten the lives and livelihoods of people around the world, especially in the Global South (developing) Countries. President Dr. Dr. Ali has been commended for the positions Guyana has taken on the UN Security Council. Following his swearing in ceremony on September 7, 2025, President Dr. Ali has said that his second term will be consequential. He made the most profound and audacious decision to establish an anti-corruption agency to root-out corruption at all levels of government and state agencies and is working assiduously to lower the cost of living, decrease poverty, improve the lives of the poor and be as transparent and accountable as possible. Under the leadership of President Dr. Ali, Prime Minister Brigadier (ret’d) Mark Phillips and Vice President Dr. Bharat Jagdeo, there is evidence of sustained economic growth and development in every region, village and district in the country. No one can or should disregard or ignore the record of progress of the PPPC government from 2020 to now. It includes a high level of economic growth, and the easing of inflation while the debt and the cost to service it remain low. Our leaders have transformed the country’s economy. Based on a recent IMF estimate, Guyana has the fastest-growing economy in the world, with a GDP growth rate of approximately 43.6 percent, which is considered the highest in the world. According to the World Bank, the poverty rate in Guyana in 2019 stood at 49 percent. However, with zero excise tax on gasoline, the removal of VAT on water and electricity, cash grants, increases in pension and wages and other poverty reduction programs, some sources have indicated that the current poverty rate may be significantly lower than the 2019 rate of 49%, or possibly reduced by more than half, but the exact current figure is unconfirmed. The lowering of inflation, decrease in poverty, increases in pensions and wages, cash transfers of $100,000 to every citizen over the age of 18 years, the creation of more than 50,000 jobs, expansion of infrastructure and the granting of thousands of houses-lots are evidence that the country is moving in the right direction. Not to mention that the policies of the government have profoundly impacted the electorate who on September 1st 2025 General and Regional Elections have rewarded President Ali and the PPPC with the largest majority of 36 seats in Parliament.
